General questions

How do I search for e-books?

The easiest way to search for e-books is to do it directly on the Libby (English), Numilog (French) or Onleihe (German) platforms.

Alternatively, you can find them with the a-z.lu search engine. The advantage of this is that you aren’t limited to a single platform, but can search across Libby, Numilog and Onleihe at the same time. You can do this in three easy steps:

  1. Open a-z.lu and log in with your library card number and password.
  2. Type the title or author of the e-book you are looking for in the search box and select “Digital Library” from the drop down menu, then “Ebooks.lu (public libraries)”. Click on the magnifying glass or press Enter to launch the search.
  3. On the right side of the results page, use the filter “Type of publication” and select “Books”. You can also combine this with other filters, such as a language filter.

Why can’t I read e-books on an Amazon Kindle?

The Kindle e-reader is a popular device, but Amazon has opted to prioritise direct-to-consumer sales with its own e-books offering and doesn’t support third-party providers like digital library services. Amazon also employs its own Digital Rights Management (DRM) system, which differs from those used by other industry players. DRM systems are implemented to protect e-books from unauthorised copying, ensuring the rights of authors and publishers.

You can, however, use the ebooks.lu service on other e-readers such as Pocketbook or Tolino devices.

Are e-books accessible for people with impaired vision?

Yes, however, they must be downloaded to Adobe Digital Editions (ADE), which can be used with screen readers. For this you need the JAWS or NVDA reader on Windows or VoiceOver reader on the MacOS.

The Libby and the Onleihe mobile apps work with iOS VoiceOver and Android TalkBack.

The Libby, Onleihe and Numilog websites may also work with desktop screen readers such as NVDA and JAWS.

Fore more accessibility information and instructions, see:

Where can I get a library card to use the service?

In order to be able to use the ebooks.lu service, you need a free membership at one of the participating partner libraries. You can find a full list of them on the About us page.

At some libraries, such as the National Library of Luxembourg (BnL) and the Lëtzebuerg City Bibliothèque, it’s possible to register online.

Why do I receive the error message: “Vous n’avez pas accès à ce proxy”?

There are three main reasons for this error message:

  • Your library card is expired. Please check the validity of the library card and renew it if necessary.
  • You are not a member of a partner library which participates in the ebooks.lu project.
  • You are under the age of 14, for which the ebooks.lu offering is not available.

Adobe Digital Editions

What is Adobe Digital Editions?

All e-books and audiobooks are protected from unauthorised copying to safeguard the rights of authors and publishers. The copy protection systems prevent you from using the e-books and audiobooks beyond the loan period of a maximum of 14 days. The copy protection systems are known as Digital Rights Management (DRM) and their circumvention is prohibited by law.

Adobe Digital Editions is a software application that enables you to enjoy your e-books and audiobooks in compliance with this copyright protection. It is available for Windows, MacOS, Android and iOS.

In order to use Adobe Digital Editions, you must create an Adobe ID.

How do I create an Adobe ID?

You can create a free Adobe ID in three simple steps:

  1. Open the Adobe website and click on “Create an account”.
  2. Complete the online form and make a note of the email address and password you use.
  3. Go to your email account and open the welcome message from Adobe. Click on the activation link to complete the registration process.

Your Adobe ID is the email address you entered in the online form. You need this email and password for all the devices on which you read e-books.

To check whether your email address has been verified, sign into your account and open the “Account and security” menu from the top of the page. Scroll down to “Account information and access”, your primary email (Adobe ID) should read “Verified”.

How do I install Adobe Digital Editions?

In order to use Adobe Digital Editions, you need to follow these 4 steps.

  1. Open the Adobe website and download Adobe Digital Editions software.
  2. Once installed, open Adobe Digital Editions, click on the “Help” menu tab, then on “Authorize Computer”.
  3. Select “Adobe ID” as e-book vendor, then enter your Adobe ID (email address) and password, then click on “Authorize”.
  4. Click on “OK” to complete the authorisation process. Your computer is now authorised to download the e-books you borrow.

How do I read e-books using Adobe Digital Editions?

When you download e-books, you’ll receive a file with the extension “.acsm”. This file can be opened in Adobe Digital Editions and linked to your Adobe ID. Instructions for downloading e-books in the correct file format are available for each platform:

How do I transfer an e-book to an e-reader using Adobe Digital Editions?

When you download e-books, you’ll receive a file with the extension “.acsm”. This file can be opened in Adobe Digital Editions and linked to your Adobe ID.

Next, you can transfer them to your e-reader using a USB cable. For the transfer to work, the e-reader must be authorised with the same Adobe ID as the Adobe Digital Editions application. Most e-readers are automatically authorised with the same Adobe ID during the transfer. If not, you must manually add your Adobe ID to the e-reader and try again. Please refer to the manual of your e-reader for instructions.

The transfer to an e-reader works best with a computer (Windows or MacOS), but it may also work with some tablets and mobile devices. Restarting and reinstalling may help in case of problems.
